Uncertainty due to spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity is explicitly incorporated into a procedure for the optimal design of aquifer remediation strategies. The management procedure is based on the stochastic approach to groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling, in which the hydraulic conductivity is represented as a random field. The remediation design procedure begins with the solution of the stochastic inverse model. Maximum Likelihood and Gaussian conditional mean estimation are used to characterize the random conductivity field based on hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic head measurements. Next, the nonlinear groundwater quality management problem is simultaneously solved for a sampling of hydraulic conductivity realizations. An example shows that reclamation design based on as few as thirty conductivity realizations can provide reliable remediation strategies.

Ef.ficient Groundwater Remediation System Design Subject to Uncertainty Using Robust Optimization

Many groundwater remediation designs for contaminant plume containment are developed using mathematically based groundwater now models. These mathematical models are most eiTective as predictive tools when the parameters that govern groundwater flow are known with a high degree of certainty. The hydraulic conductivity of an aquifer, however, is uncertain, and so remediation designs developed lI...

Steady-state discharge into tunnels in formations with random variability and depth–decaying trend of hydraulic conductivity

Multi-scale heterogeneity of geological formations is a rule, which consists of random (local-scale) and systematic (large-scale) variability of hydraulic conductivity. The random variability and depth–decaying trend, a systematic variability, have different effects on subsurface flow, thus on groundwater discharge into tunnels. Little research has examined this problem in the past. Using Monte...
